Our goal to build the capacity for academicians at the business school who are interested in using case-based learning in their undergraduate and graduate teaching. The workshop is focused on effectively using cases in teaching. Participants work through all the steps in the case-teaching process using various exercises, group discussions and case-teaching practice sessions. NBEAC Organized a two day workshop on “Case teaching & contemporary methods” on 18th – 19th July at KSBL, Karachi, which was a success story. The main aim was to cater the need for Cased based and Contemporary methods teaching in today’s world to evolve from traditional setup to the more practical and experienced approved techniques so that in order to deal with real life situations which enhances one’s ability to make accurate and timely decisions. Participants took notes from this workshop so that they can incorporate in their teaching methods to develop graduates having a more applied and analytical approach to the on hand problems. Along with the Case teaching methods other contemporary teaching techniques were also discussed regarding the participant-centered learning which focuses more on the involvement of the students in class studies and the Experiential Learning which mainly emphasized on the hands on experienced learning techniques and deep process of reflection.
The workshop was attended by 42 participants from the business Schools of all over the Pakistan. It covered many aspects ranging from case discussions, activities and exercises. The Consultants for the said workshop were Dr. Jawaid Ghani, Professor (Karachi School of Business and Leadership, Karachi), Dr. Zeeshan Ahmed, Rector and Dean (Karachi School of Business and Leadership, Karachi), Dr. Athar Siddiqui, Associate Dean (Karachi School of Business and Leadership, Karachi) all of them having vast knowledge of case based teaching techniques as well as years of experience regarding Case teaching, Participant-Centered Learning and Experiential Learning.
Day 1 of the workshop consisted of 4 sessions first two sessions were based on Participated-Centered Learning. The session started with the introduction to the topic, after that covered areas of Pre-requisites for Teaching Excellence, Participant-Centered Learning: How to make Every Classroom a Dynamic and Truly Engaging Experience and lastly concluded with Exercises and Participant Experiences. Next two sessions were based on Case Teaching which included Introduction, Preparation and Effectively Managing Case, Balancing Content and Evaluation and Case discussion.
Day 2 consisted of three sessions first two were based on Experiential Learning and consisted of topics Understanding Experiential Learning (EL), the need for EL in Management Education, EL Activity, Activity Debrief, Drawing Theory from EL and Issues in Applying. The workshop concluded with the last session involving panel discussion, mainly included Key Takeaways – Short Presentations, Sharing and Integrating Knowledge – Open Forum Q&As and Closing Note.
