Introduction

A survey commissioned by the HEC in 2015 showed that degrees in business and management were among the most highly-preferred qualifications sought by Pakistani employers from job applicants.   This suggests that employers feel that such qualifications are worthwhile in terms of potential impact.  At the same time, NBEAC data show that only 30 business schools in Pakistan are currently accredited for quality.  This suggests that there remains much room for improvement.  Accordingly, the Deans and Directors Conference 2022 has as its theme the impact and relevance of business schools in Pakistan and what can be done to enhance positive impact.

The conference will feature the following five panel sessions:

Day 1 - Monday, 14 March 2022

Impact and Relevance of Business Schools: Empirical Perspective

In this session we will focus on what is known empirically about the impact and relevance of business education in Pakistan.  Speakers will report on pertinent studies.  We will discuss in particular the skills for which there is the most demand and consider the extent to which a typical business education provides those skills.

Experiential learning as a way of promoting impact and relevance

In this session we will focus on experiential learning as a way to provide market-relevant skills.  Speakers will report on the experiences of selected business schools in integrating experiential learning into their programs.  Wherever possible, the impact of such programs on student careers will be described.

Collaboration across business schools to improve impact

It is often pointed out that schools can have greater impact if they work together than if they work alone.  Speakers will discuss the role of a cooperative approach to teaching and research, drawing on examples from Pakistani schools. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of collaboration on helping schools in remote areas where the potential for impact is often very high.

Training Program 1: Future New Deans

This training program is aimed at new or aspiring deans of business schools.  It identifies the skills that deans should ideally have as well as the challenges they are likely to encounter.  Participants will learn about the key roles and responsibilities of deans and ways in which to manage these.

Training Program 2: Strategic Planning for Business Schools

This training program is aimed at senior managers of business schools and seeks to enhance their understanding of strategic planning as a tool for achieving institutional goals and objectives. It will cover the rationale for strategic planning as a management tool, key steps in the strategic planning process and ways to assess whether desired results are being achieved.
Day 2 - Tuesday, 15 March2022

Enhancing impact via social responsibility programs

In addition to economic impact, social impact is an important objective of higher education. Accordingly, social responsibility is included as an NBEAC standard.  This session will consider examples of good practice showing how various schools promote social responsibility through courses, internships and projects.  The session will also discuss what is known empirically about the impacts of actual social responsibility programs.

Emerging topics for business school curricula

In this session, we will focus on a number of emerging topics for business school curricula that should make them more relevant for future work and service careers.  Among these will be: Design Thinking Data Science and Gaming/Simulations etc.

Training Program 3: The Continuing Importance of Case Study Teaching in Business Schools

The case study method is more than a hundred years old.  It has spread far and wide among business schools across the world and has remained an important aspect of business education even as principles-based management has become better established.  Participants will learn why the case method retains high value as a teaching tool through discussions of a sampling of Pakistani and international cases.
