Introduction | ||||||
Recent years have seen many changes in the environment for business education. The world of work is changing dramatically under the influence of digital technology, raising questions about the appropriate scope and content of business education in the future. The technology involved in the delivery of education is also changing at a rapid pace, raising questions about ideal models for teaching and learning. Finally, the sudden onset of a global pandemic forced higher education to go online for the most part of 2020; will this continue and, if so, with what consequences? In this year’s fully online Deans and Directors Conference, we consider the implications of these changes for business education policy, practice and pedagogy through a set of carefully designed panels featuring local and international speakers. The Conference will also feature two special roundtable sessions for Deans and Directors. |
Day 1 Sessions - April 6, 2021 (Tuesday) | ||
*(Sessions are shown below at Pakistan Standard Time) | ||
Timing* | Session Name | Details |
---|---|---|
6:00pm - 7:00pm | Inaugural Session | The inaugural session will feature addresses by senior staff of international accreditation organizations (such as AACSB and EFMD) and support networks (such as GBSN) to convey a sense of the challenges and opportunities that face business schools across the world. We also expect an address by the Chairman of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. |
7:00pm - 8:00pm | Emerging Issues for the Business School Curriculum | Recent decades have seen huge changes in the scope and content of businesses the world over. Many of the top ten companies by capitalization did not even exist a quarter century ago. Moreover, the pace of change continues to be dramatic. This session will address key issues for business education curricula that arise from the pace and content of change, focusing on such sectors as E-commerce and Fintech. |
8:00pm - 9:00pm | Virtual Teaching: Lessons of Experience | Covid19 forced Pakistani and international business schools to go online for most of 2020. What lessons can be drawn from this experience for student access, course delivery, learning retention and assessment? What are the likely implications for the broader business of teaching such as on faculty selection, faculty skills, school infrastructure requirements, and HEC policies relating to the licensing of new schools? |
Day 2 Sessions - April 7, 2021 (Wednesday) | ||
Timing* | Session Name | Details |
---|---|---|
6:00pm - 7:00pm | UEP and Business Education: Challenges to Implementation | The new Undergraduate Education Policy of the HEC proposes major changes in undergraduate education through which close to half the undergraduate curriculum would be brought under a prescriptive formula. This panel will examine the challenges likely to be faced by business schools in the implementation of this proposal. |
7:00pm - 8:00pm | Non-Standard MBA Programs: Lessons of Experience | While the standard MBA program in Pakistan is a two-year four-semester model, it co-exists with many non-standard models, such as the part-time MBA and the Executive MBA. Indeed, in western countries, the bulk of enrolment in business schools is now accounted for by part-time students. This session will examine the pros and cons of non-standard models of MBA programs. |
8:00pm - 9:00pm | Management Consultancy in Pakistan: Opportunities and Challenges | While management consultancy is a thriving industry in many western countries, it is much less so in Pakistan, being confined on the demand side mostly to multinational companies and on the supply side to international consultants. This panel of corporate leaders and academic deans will discuss the main reasons for this and indicate a path for the future. |
