Workshop on “Gender & Diversity in Higher Education” was conducted online by Training and Development wing of NBEAC. Dr. Jawad Syed (Professor) and Dr. Faiza Ali (Associate Professor) from Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) were the presenters. The workshop spread over two days in which the content was designed in such a way that by the end of workshop participants would have critical understanding of stereotypes and unconscious bias on the basis of gender and other dimensions of diversity; to develop sensitivity and awareness about gender issues, equality, and sexual harassment in higher education; to understand why institutions fail to eliminate harassment and instances where anti-harassment laws and policies are abused and last but the least; to identify and suggest the possible way forward.
The expectations of participants from this workshop were diverse including; the basic understanding of gender, diversity and its importance of incorporating it in curriculum or teaching to students. Furthermore, to learn the problems both the genders face at workplace; to get understanding of how to deal with the related situations especially in case of female staff and students; to learn about the role of diversity at workplace; to look into challenges of diversity and impact of diversity on management at workplace. Some members also participated with the expectation of learning of differentiating the disciplinary matters with harassment matters and how to deal with cases of sexual harassment especially dealing with harassment of male counterparts and how students should be allowed to share or discuss issues related to gender and harassment.
The workshop was exclusively sponsored by Sukkur IBA University and more than 20 participants from across Pakistan and from different disciplines attended the workshop specifically from the areas of gender studies and diversity. On Day 2, the workshop was concluded with group presentations on addressing gender, diversity and harassment related issues in Higher Education.
